I had the same problem recently running Windows 7 on an iMac and managed to hack the nv_disp.inf file on version 301.42 to get it to install fine. Basically, you need to add an identifier from your graphics card to the inf file and away she goes. Not to hard.

I have looked into this driver issue as I have been running windows 8.1 on the Vostro 3500 laptop for sometime. However the graphics driver sometimes crashes and has to recover. While this is useable it is not ideal.

Windows 10 forced an "enhancement" upon me several months ago. At that time, the new W10 would not let me see my nVidia card. I tried updating drivers (already up to date but what the heck, maybe reinstalling them would help), I tried going to PnP and forcing Win10 to recognize the nVidia card, all to no avail. Selecting to draw a circle in XFig and placing the pointer to the drawing area crashes X immediately in an amd64 computer with ATI radeon x700 graphics card.
