Download Winamp 5.8 Latest Version: What's New and Why You Need It

After a long hiatus, most users had settled on Winamp no longer returning. Little did they know, the old-timer app came back with a vengeance. Not only does it now have a customizable interface, but Winamp has also revamped its file manager and layout. It has also been optimized to work on Windows 10. The latest version of the app is now available.

For some context, the world hasn't seen a new version of Winamp since 2013, just before Radionomy purchased it from AOL. It may have been retired, but it wasn't remotely forgotten. In fact, TechCrunch recently reported that Winamp still has 100 million monthly users, many of which are certainly rushing with glee to download version 5.8 with a cautiously hopeful eye on Radionomy's future plans for the iconic media player.

The release notes for Winamp 5.8 state that "a leaked version of Winamp 5.8 recently spread over the Internet. Consequently, we have decided to make this new version available to you, revised by us. We therefore recommend that you download this version rather than any other as we guarantee it is safe for you to use. This version is not an ongoing project but be sure that we are currently working hard on a future new Winamp."

Version 1 of Winamp was released in 1997, and quickly grew popular with over 3 million downloads,[9] paralleling the developing trend of MP3 (music) file sharing. The 2.x versions were widely used and made Winamp one of the most downloaded Windows applications.[10] By 2000, Winamp had over 25 million registered users[11] and by 2001 it had 60 million users.[12] A poor reception to the 2002 rewrite, Winamp3, was followed by the release of Winamp 5 in 2003, and a later release of version 5.5 in 2007. A now-discontinued version for Android was also released, along with early counterparts for MS-DOS and Macintosh.

The 2.x versions were widely used and made Winamp one of the most downloaded pieces of software for Windows.[10] By the end of 1998, there were already over 60 plugins and hundreds of skins made for the software.[60]

With the release of Winamp version 5.66 on November 20, 2013, AOL announced that Winamp.com would shut down on December 20, 2013, and Winamp would cease to be offered for download after that date.[76]
